Paradisus Cancun Part I

As part of our prep for our wedding next year (click here for more details on the engagement and my ring), my fiance and I attended the My Dream Wedding Show in January. The grand prize draw for the show was a 4 nights/5 days trip to the all inclusive Paradisus Cancun, which was graciously provided by Marlin Travel. My fiance was lucky enough to win the grand prize! We've never won anything remotely close to this, so I couldn't believe it until I saw the email he received from one of the reps at Marlin Travel.

We did have to pay for the flights and we decided to book them through Marlin Travel as well. After doing some research on weather and peak tourist months, we decided to go to Cancun in late April. I wanted to go during the last week of April for my birthday, but the dates I wanted weren't available. Apparently, we were quite lucky according to the doorman as it was raining the week before.

The hotel is about a 20 minute drive from the airport. We hired a private shuttle to drive us instead of getting a taxi. There are several companies that offer private shuttle service to and from the hotel to the airport, but we decided to hire a company called Canada Transfers as they have many positive reviews and they charge in Canadian dollars (no need to worry about conversion rates). It took us about 1 hour to clear customs as there were tons of flights coming in (it was 3:30pm when we arrived)! The reps from Canada Transfers were waiting for us just outside the doors right after the customs area. They provided us with cold towels and beverages and after checking our voucher and confirmation paperwork, we were good to go in less than 5 minutes!

We were greeted and directed to a check-in counter as soon as we entered the resort. Since Paradisus is quite a large resort (with over 600 rooms divided up in 5 pyramids), the representative asks for the booking last name first in order to direct guests to the right check-in counter. The main lobby is definitely an impressive sight with plants and hanging vines everywhere.

In the middle of the main lobby is Bana, one of the restaurants included in the all inclusive rates. They have nightly entertainment that ends around 8pm when the other show at Avenue Bar starts. The performers at Bana are pretty loud so this isn't the best place to have dinner if you're planning to have a conversation. This place also has the tiniest sushi rolls I've ever seen (about half the size of the sushi rolls in Vancouver). My boyfriend was still hungry when we were done eating haha

We were in the Junior Suite with Lagoon View.  The room and washroom are quite spacious, but I found the lighting in the bathroom to be too dark. It's also pretty evident that the resort is older and may need some renovations. The washroom, while clean, looks dated and has a few fixtures that definitely need some extra care. I only took one picture of the room, but you can see more pictures on TripAdvisor or Oyster.

Our room was also a corner room on the 4th floor in the main pyramid so we could hear all the commotion in the main lobby. It's pretty noisy up until about 12-1am, so I'd recommend a higher floor or one not facing the middle of the pyramid.
